The South Street Seaport is a historic district in Lower Manhattan. While the rest of the city changes and grows taller each year, the South Street Seaport area stands determined as a reminder of Manhattan’s historic and humble origins. It is here, among some of the oldest architecture in NYC, that you’re welcomed to a taste of old Manhattan. Furthermore, alongside 19th century buildings and sailing ships, rests modern tourist malls, seaside restaurants, harbor cruises, and seasonal activities. Add on top of that a beautiful view of the Brooklyn Bridge, and you can be certain that there is plenty to do at the South Street Seaport.

Before Manhattan became the enterprising trendsetter of all things daring and modern in a city, it was known for its major role as a port city and mercantile town. The Dutch originally founded the South Street area as a port in 1625. That port would then service the British during the 18th century before it collapsed during the Revolutionary War. However, following the war’s conclusion, the port reopened as the Port of New York. It is here, at the South Street Seaport, that New York would host the country’s largest system of maritime trade. It would sustain that title until the 1930s when the piers fell into disuse.

Today, the South Street Seaport area is a designated historic district. As a result of this designation, many of the 19th century commercial buildings and ships have been preserved and renovated. At the forefront of this preservation exists the South Street Seaport Museum. This large facility provides a number of interactive exhibits, experiences, and educational programs. Other activities include dining in one of the Seaport’s many seaside restaurants, shopping at Pier 17, and visiting the deck at Pier 15 for a spectacular view of the Brooklyn Bridge, East River, and Brooklyn Heights area.
