The Strand Bookstore is an iconic NYC independent bookstore founded in 1927. Ben Bass built his store with only $600 and a dream. His dream was to create a place where books would be loved and where book lovers could come together. The Strand moved to its current location two blocks from Union Square thanks to Ben’s son Fred. Now Fred and his daughter Nancy run the store together with their book loving crew of over 200 members. Ben’s shop is now the only survivor of the famous “Book Row” which had 48 bookstores in six city blocks in the Lower East Side.
Its famous slogan “18 Miles of Books” is featured on the goods and merchandise sold at the store. Books at Strand cover a wide variety of topics and genres. From philosophy manuscripts to recipe cook books, Strand has them all. And with over 2.5 million new, used, and rare books in its 3 floors, the store has something for tourists and locals alike. Visitors will also love the dollar carts outside of the store where they can find hidden gems in the piles and piles of books. Strand hosts many events at the store like book signings and readings by featured authors. These events can be heartwarming or hilarious but they are always exciting.
An iconic New York City shop, the Strand Bookstore has been featured in films and shows for its unique atmosphere and history. Films like Six Degrees of Separation, Julie & Julia, and Remember Me have featured the store. Strand is also famous for having employed many Lower East Side artists including Patti Smith and Tom Verlaine.
Strand’s number one priority has been to provide the best service to their customers who adore books as much as they do. And with over 80 years of experience, this family run business can cater to any book lovers needs.
