Serving up traditional Ukrainian fare in the heart of the East Village.

New York - Veselka

Well known as an East Village staple, this incredible 24/7 diner is not only rich in taste, but in history as well. It all began in 1954 when Wlodymyr Darmochwalas opened a small candy store on the corner of 9th street and 2nd Avenue. The store quickly grew in popularity, allowing it to expand in 1966, taking over a store front on East Ninth Street. The new space was called the “Blue Room,” and used by Darmochwalas as a private meeting and dining room. In 1990, Veselka decided to become open 24 hour/7 days a week! Just six years after, Veselka expanded to double its size, becoming the restaurant that New Yorker’s know and love today.

Veselka has celebrated numerous victories in its many years, including countless five star reviews and its own cookbook in 2009! From its humble beginnings, the eatery has certainly become a home for villagers in search of dependable, no-nonsense, delicious food.

With big windows and a bright interior, the cozy Ukrainian coffee shop is a perfect spot for brunch. Additionally, its 24/7 status makes it a hot spot for night owls and insomniacs to satisfy even their latest nighttime cravings. You can enjoy their famous pierogi, borscht, goulash, and many other Ukrainian and American comfort foods. Veselka means “rainbow” in Ukrainian, and has certainly come to embrace the American cultural meaning behind the word. The restaurant is hands down one of the happiest and down to earth places to eat in the city.
