Flatiron District

Ladies Mile, Historic District, and more

The Flatiron District is a relatively recent name for this area. In its early days, the area was filled with numerous toy manufacturers, thereby called the Toy District.
The Toy Building at 23rd Street and Fifth Avenue was the mecca for toy manufacturers starting around 1905. Manufacturing shifted overseas in the late 1980s. Across from the Toy Building is the Flatiron Building, an incredible skyscraper and historical landmark.
Madison Square Park, founded in 1624, is right across the street and serves as an urban recreational space. The New York Life building is particularly easy to spot with its golden pyramid topper. Built in 1928, the building stands out as one of the unique roofs of New York.
The area also includes the Ladies Mile Historic District. The area was once known for upper-class shopping. Famous companies such as B. Altman, Bergdorf Goodman, Lord & Taylor, Tiffany, Gimbel’s and MACY’s got their start in this district.
After WWI these buildings became warehouses and eventually abandoned. However, with rising real estate, these beautiful buildings have been rehabilitated into brand new shopping districts once again. The giant LEGO Store is also in this area, boasting a plastic-brick-replica of the Statue of Liberty’s torch.

For a night out on the town, Raines Law Room is an intimate lounge where one can lay out with a cocktail in hand and enjoy social conversation. Flatiron Hall is the perfect place to grab a beer, with over twelve different beers and twenty-two cocktails.  In fact,  it is a beautiful pub for friends and families to relax from all the sightseeing.

Gramercy Tavern is an upscale American Restaurant, while Almond is a bistro that combines the best of rustic French cuisine in an elegant atmosphere.
