For Thinkers, Doers, and Curious People

The Staten Island Museum, which welcomes nearly 220,000 people each year, is freshly opened in its new home in the borough’s Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden. In 1965, museum members saved this historic site from demolition, and soon, the beautiful building, formerly a dormitory for retired seamen, will help visitors discover the unique offerings of New York City’s southernmost borough via the Staten Island Museum’s collection. In addition to the exterior being restored, the building has become LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental design) certified and will become a 21st-century, climate-controlled museum inside of a historical 19th-century landmarked structure. The original Staten Island Museum location still operates in St. George, near the ferry terminal.

The organization prides itself on providing a way to connect natural science, art, and history. And it has been doing so since 1881. The Museum displays its passion for life and the world through innovative exhibitions, stimulating programs, and scholarly research. It is also a member of NYC’s Cultural Institutions Group. With their help, collections are readily accessible to all.
