People can’t call themselves real New Yorkers until they’ve taken a ride on the Staten Island Ferry. Docking in Lower Manhattan and Staten Island’s St. George, the 24-hour boat is a great way to relax for an hour with the wind in your hair on a nice day. And those nice days are the best time to sit on the outer decks of the Ferry for panoramic photo-ops with the Statue of Liberty.
There are eight vessels (in a signature orange color) that accommodate some 66,000 passengers on a given weekday. Although the Ferry service has been in operation for 200 years, it remains a staple of the “forgotten borough” and- best of all- requires no fee under most circumstances.
