One of the hardest-to-miss buildings on 5th Avenue is the Beaux Arts columned one between 41st and 42nd Streets. It’s the NYPL Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, better known as the New York Public Library’s Main Branch, which opened in 1911. The two lion statues that guard the doors are named “Patience” and “Fortitude,” two qualities that, according to Mayor LaGuardia, all New Yorkers have.
Inside the library, the grand lobby boasts marble floors, candelabras, and chandeliers. There is also a well-stocked gift shop on this level and an exhibition space; the latter changes its display frequently and is typically free to view. But perhaps the most lauded nook in here is the Rose Main Reading Room, literally lined with thousands of reference books as well as majestic windows. The NYPL was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965.
