(Opening in April 2018)
New York Wheel is a 630-foot tall observation wheel that fits up to 40 people per pod. The wheel itself can fit up to 1,440 per revolution. It takes passengers on a 38-minute ride over the New York Harbor. One of the most striking features about New York Wheel is that it boasts $7 million of LED lighting. As a result, New York Wheel illuminates the New York City skyline when the wheel is in motion.
The goal is to encourage New Yorkers and international guests and tourists to visit and explore Staten Island. Since the wheel is only a short walk from the Staten Island Ferry, visitors can easily access it.
Meir Laufer first developed the wheel’s concept in October 2008. At a conference featuring former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Laufer and the current CEO of New York Wheel struck a deal. The two then received permission to construct the wheel in St. George in Staten Island. Nearby, a retail complex featuring various stores and restaurants attract visitors and tourists as well. After the ride, passengers can spend leisure time at the retail complex.
