The New York Liberty, a professional women’s basketball team, is one of the eight original WNBA franchises. Since the founding of the league in 1997, the Liberty have been playing in Madison Square Garden, the same arena that houses the New York Knicks and Rangers. In just their first season, they went on to appear in the WNBA Finals. They would also make finals appearances in 1999, 2000, and 2002. Although they would not win in any of these appearances, the New York Liberty remains a consistent playoff team. In fact, they’ve made the playoffs 14 out of 20 times. The team’s historic success has been led by a slew of well-known and formidable players. Teresa Weatherspoon, Cappie Pondexter, and Becky Hammon are just a few of the all-stars to have played for the New York Liberty.
The New York Liberty’s logo features the Statue of Liberty, and the team’s mascot is a dog wearing the statue’s crown. Liberty players can be recognized wearing the team’s colors: green, black, orange, blue, and white. You can watch the team play live at Madison Square Garden. During game night, expect to also see stunning half-time and pre-game stunts from the Liberty Torch Patrol.
