Madison Square Garden, commonly referred to as “MSG” or “The Garden”, is one of NY’s most famous and celebrated stadiums. It was first built in 1879, making it the oldest major sporting facility in New York City. However, after a number of reconstructions, The Garden as it stands only dates back to 1968. But while the stadium might appear modern on the outside, don’t be fooled into thinking it lacks history on the inside.
New Yorkers pride themselves over a long tradition of competitive and talented sports teams. Among those teams, the New York Knicks, Rangers, and Liberty all find their home at The Garden. For fans, MSG’s grand arena has been the location of countless magical sporting moments and legendary performances. Just look up in the arena’s rafters to get a glance at its rich history of championship victories and retired jerseys.
A sports stadium isn’t all Madison Square Garden is noted for. In a city rife with live concerts and performances each day, MSG stands proudly among NYC’s biggest and best venues. In fact, it hosts the most high-profile concert events out of anywhere else in the city. Accordingly, even musical legends like Elton John and Billy Joel have referenced The Garden as among their favorite places to perform.
