The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum offers exhibitions and programs that explore history, science and service. Wander the decks of a legendary aircraft carrier that served during World War II and the Vietnam War. Climb into a submarine from the Cold War era. See a collection of authentically restored aircraft, including the Concorde—a supersonic jet. And walk beneath Enterprise, the world’s first space shuttle. Visitors of all ages and abilities are invited to follow these feats of engineering through history and learn about the ingenuity, bravery and sacrifice of those who served on them.

On December 1, 1941—just six days before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor brought the United States into World War II—the keel for USS Intrepid was laid and its construction began. Intrepid served in the U.S. Navy for over three decades surviving 5 kamikaze attacks and played a role in World War II, the Cold War, the Space Race and the Vietnam War. On May 24, 1962, Intrepid served as a primary recovery vessel for the Mercury-Atlas 7 space mission. Helicopters from the ship picked up astronaut Scott Carpenter. Three years later, Intrepid helicopters recovered Gemini 3 astronauts John Young and Virgil “Gus” Grissom and their space capsule on March 23, 1965. Today the ‘Fighting I’, the boat’s nickname serves as testament to its many victories in war and peace.

While the ship has been modified over the years it still maintains an impressive length of 912 feet! That’s about the same length as three football fields set up end to end. The Museum is also home to Enterprise—the world’s first space shuttle and the only space shuttle on display in the Northeast. This space shuttle was initially named Constitution, but Star Trek fans successfully lobbied to change the name to Enterprise. The Museum’s submarine Growler is the only American guided missile submarine open to the public. The museum is also home to one of four supersonic Concorde planes. The Concorde at the Intrepid Museum flew from New York to London in 2 hours, 52 minutes and 59 seconds in 1996, setting a world speed record. For a great place to spend many hours, Intrepid should be a stop in New York.
