Fraunces Tavern

A “Revolutionary” Spot
Fraunces Tavern
Fraunces Tavern Museum’s mission is to preserve and interpret the history of the American Revolutionary era through public education. It is also home to the Fraunces Tavern Restaurant.

Fraunces Tavern serves double duty as a museum and restaurant in Lower Manhattan. The building served an important role during the American Revolution. In fact, George Washington worked here- and it was also the site of peace negotiations with the British and early federal offices. In addition, the New York Chamber of Commerce came into being when it held its first meeting in the tavern. Since 1904, it has been owned by New York’s Sons of the Revolution. It maintains that it is one of the city’s oldest structures. The tavern’s interior museum interprets the artifacts within.

The Fraunces Tavern is named for its founder, restauranteur Samuel Fraunces. Although slated for demolition in 1900, the site was saved. In 1965, it achieved landmark status. Today, the building is both an eatery as well as a museum. In the museum part, you’ll find nine galleries that display maps, paintings, and furniture from the colonial period. There is also a recreation of a period dining room.
