American Ballet Theatre (ABT) is not just a company. It’s a collaboration. They have a commitment to uphold the best in dance and movement and to make it available to all who are interested. The company is based in NYC but their big Apple season is very short. Only 8-weeks in the spring and an even shorter season in the fall. The rest of the year they tour around the world.

The American Ballet Theatre was founded in 1939 and is today recognized as one of the world’s leading classical ballet companies. In 2006, the United States Congress also recognized it as “America’s National Ballet Company.”

The company spends most of the year touring around the globe and only spends a few weeks in NYC. In addition, ABT is sponsored by the State Department of the United States. It is the only major cultural institution that each year tours the United States performing for more than 450,000 people. They have also visited 50 different countries on their 30 international tours.

ABT is home to Misty Copeland and if you don’t know who she is yet, Copeland, the Kansas City native, made history as the first African American Female Principal Dancer in 2015 with the company. She joined the ABT studio company for a year before becoming a member of the corps de ballet in 2001 and 6 years later she was appointed a Soloist. In 2014 she was appointed, by President Obama, as the President’s Council of Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. The same year she also won Dance Magazine Award.

The Artistic Director is since 1992 the former ABT Principal Dancer Kevin McKenzie. Above all, he wants to bring the company to the greatest stages of the world.

To see if you have timed your NYC vacation with their NYC performances, check out the calendar here, and if you dream of watching Misty Copeland live, keep an eye out for tickets release dates – they sell out very fast (sometimes in just a couple of hours!).
