The Nutcracker

Balanchine’s The Nutcracker is an essential classic in New York City. The Nutcracker celebrates its 63rd year as part of the New York City Ballet, and with its deep history and deep rooted emotional performance, it’s no wonder it has been running for so long. The ballet will leave you wanting to watch it over and over again, never tiring of the beautiful story.  

The ballet begins when the lights dim and you transport you into a new magical world. The sets, costumes, dance sequences, and visual effects, are unbelievably stunning. The Nutcracker comprises of almost 90 dancers, 62 musicians, 32 stagehands, and two casts of 50 young students from the School of American Ballet! The whole cast joins together perfectly to create one of the best ballets you will ever see. The show is welcome to children of all ages and will audibly captivate an audience of all ages.

Some of the notable experiences and parts of the ballet include: the one-ton christmas tree that magically grows (almost 30 feet!) as the ballet goes on, the endless flutter of crystal-shaped snowflakes throughout the performance, and the hilarious and fun characters. The technological effects and the choreography combine to give an incredible show. Act I introduces the characters- the Stahlbaum children- and begins to transition from mundane life into an otherworldly fantasy. And after experiencing this new world, you (and the characters) will never want to leave!

George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker is one of the beautifully complex works presented by the New York City’s Ballet. The company’s show is immensely popular and truly unforgettable.
