Washington Heights / Inwood

The Highest Tip

Washington Heights and Inwood are hidden treasures at the tip of Manhattan. Washington Heights is home to the largest collection of art deco buildings anywhere in the US. In the area is the George Washington Bridge; underneath this structure is Fort Washington Park, home to the recognizable Little Red Lighthouse landmark.

Fort Tryon Park (the highest point in Manhattan) is the home of the Met Museum Cloisters- there is much history in its stained glass and illuminated manuscripts. Nearby is Highbridge Park, New York’s oldest standing bridge which brought fresh water to the city starting in 1848, now open for interesting walks after an extensive restoration.

Inwood, the northernmost tip of town, is storied to be the site where Native Americans sold Manhattan, and their relics can still be found there. The area boasts numerous new bars and restaurants, including Vines on Pine, which allows employees to taste roughly 80% of what they carry to help guests select the ideal bottle. In Inwood, CHOCnyc is a scrumptious bakery offering custom cakes.

Opened as a museum in 1916, the Dyckman Farmhouse (built in 1784) is also an excellent stop for American history buffs when visiting this area of New York.
