Hell’s Kitchen is also known as Midtown West, It is bordered on its four sides by 34th Street, 59th Street, 8th Avenue, and the Hudson River. It began life as a haven for lower- and working-class Irish Americans. In the latter half of the 20th century, however, things began to change as Hell’s Kitchen gentrified. Due to its close proximity to Broadway theatres and the Actors Studio, the area became a place for aspiring actors to call home. One famous synagogue here the Actors Temple, frequented by many Jewish celebrities.
Hell’s Kitchen boasts a variety of ethnic eateries, the most well known is Restaurant Row. Located on 48th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues, restaurant Row is known for its many fine dining establishments with many different cuisines. Take a trip back in time with a visit to the Landmark Tavern. Built in the mid 1800’s, it was a popular speakeasy during the Prohibition period and survives today as a great place to eat.
Hell’s Kitchen is also home to the WWII aircraft carrier USS Intrepid. Today, the ‘Fighting I’, as it was known, operates as the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. It features one of the four Concorde supersonic aircraft, the submarine Growler, and the space shuttle Enterprise. Nearby, the famous Circle Line cruise boats circumvent Manhattan, accompanied by in-person tour guides. Circle Line also operates a high speed thrill rides up and down the Hudson called the Beast. After all this you may be hungry so for New England fare, you can visit North River Lobster’s boat just 2 piers down.
On eof the most important features is the Jacob Javits Convention Center. The center is home to many shows include the famous Auto Show, Boat show, Franchise Show, Fancy Food Show and many more smaller shows and expositions. With 2,000,000 square feet and growing, it is a major draw for New York City.
