I’m in a New York state of mind…
My name is Joanna, creator of sittingprettyinthequeencity.com, writer & avid traveler. While many of my posts are about international travel, I wanted to write about another place closer to home and to my heart.
New York City is one of my favorite places! It never gets old to me. There is so much to do and see and the energy and hustle & bustle always makes me excited! I try to do at least one New York trip a year.
When going to New York City for a weekend, a lot of the activities you choose to do will depend on what season you decide to visit. One of my first trips to NYC was in July and we did a booze cruise down the Hudson River! The boat had music and cocktails and was a nice blend of both tourists and locals who had just gotten off work ready to enjoy the weekend. We got to see a completely different view of the city from the water and watched the sun set against the skyline. I also hadn’t been to the Statue of Liberty before so it was an added bonus that we circled around it! We ended up befriending some locals on the boat and went for dinner and drinks afterwards.
If you’re going in the Spring or Fall one of my favorite things to do is pack a picnic or swing by a bodega, bring a blanket and go sit in a park. This is a great tip especially if you’re on a budget and not wanting to eat out for every meal. Grab a bottle of wine and a cheese spread and don’t forget that even though Central Park shouldn’t be missed – there are so many beautiful parks that aren’t as well known with views of the water or gardens. The High Line is one of my favorite spots. It was a railroad system back in the day and is now a trail full of flowers and art that you can hike from it’s elevated spot in the city.
In the wintertime, try to go when the Christmas decorations are up and you can catch a glimpse of the Rockefeller tree! For a touristy fix go to the Top of the Rock for breathtaking views. Escape the cold by taking in a Broadway show or one of the many museums and galleries. While you should definitely see Times Square, please go spend time SoHo, Greenwhich village, and Chelsea! This Southern girl isn’t used to cold temperatures but even in the wintertime I tend to walk everywhere in New York as much as I can so that I’m able to see more. Some of my favorite times have been walking around lower Manhattan from one neighborhood to the next. Grab a bite in charming little Italy. Take in the charm and find a good hole in the wall bar to make some memories in.
A trip to New York City is what you make of it so decide before you go if you want to see sights, go on an adventure, or catch a comedy act. Enjoy!
