The Grand Concourse

History in the Making

Architecturally, the structures along the Grand Concourse (such as the Bronx Museum of the Arts) are notable for their Tudor and Art Deco appearances. In fact, this boulevard boasts one of the largest assortment of Art Deco buildings on the planet. One of these, interestingly, is Loew’s Paradise Theater, which began life as a “movie palace” and now operates as a haven of worship.

The namesake New York baseball team has played at this boulevard’s Yankee Stadium since the 1930s. Book lovers will also appreciate Poe Cottage and Poe Park. The cottage was the last home of Edgar Allan Poe before his death. Mill Pond Park located off Grand Concourse has 16 Deco Turf tennis courts and barbecue areas running along its Harlem River waterfront location. The area of Grand Concourse from 153rd to 167th Street has been declared a historic district by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission in 2011. The thoroughfare also has many historically significant locations.

The former Concourse Plaza Hotel was famous for housing many well known men of its time. From Yankees stars like Babe Ruth to John F. Kennedy, the hotel was the place to throw extravagant parties and gatherings during the early 20th century until its closing in the 70s. But now the location is a NYC run senior citizens residence.
