Downtown Brooklyn

The Financial District of Brooklyn
As the third largest central business district of New York City, Downtown Brooklyn is considered the heart of Brooklyn. This northwestern neighborhood is home for the borough’s local government at Borough Hall and numerous Kings County courts around the area. The neighborhood is also home to Metrotech Center, a business and educational center which houses the nation’s largest academic research park for an urban community. The complex is home to New York University Tandon School of Engineering, the headquarters of the New York Fire Department, the Brooklyn Nets and Slate Magazine notably. The area is also close by to Brooklyn Academy of Music in Fort Greene and Barclays Center in Prospect Heights.
Historically, Downtown Brooklyn was a suburb for Manhattan commuters. The neighborhood was notable in the 1850s and 1860s as a home for abolitionists and was part of the Underground railroad movement. The rezoning of the area in 2004 has lead to rapid gentrification and redevelopment of the area.
At New York Transit Museum, visitors and train fans can take a trip down NYC public transportation’s past. Located in a 1936 style subway station, the underground museum has collections of trains and subways from the beginning of the NYC transit system to the present, and the possible future of the Metropolitan Transit Authority.
Foodies coming into Downtown Brooklyn can experience a melting pot among the multicultural restaurants among the area. The Wei brings authentic Chinese food to Downtown Brooklyn. Originally hailing from Flushing Chinatown, the restaurant creates accessible fresh meals daily for all to enjoy. A favorite for mediterranean food, Doner Kebab NYC is a popular spot for falafel, bowls and wraps. The restaurant serves many options of fresh meats of chicken, beef and lamb and vegetarian options too. After eating a meal, try a piece of New York style cheesecake from the original Junior’s Restaurant location. Opened since 1950, the restaurant serves a wide variety of classic items on their menu from 10 pound steak burgers to cheese blintzes. The iconic Brooklyn restaurant had notable customers from NYC mayors, Michael Bloomberg and Bill de Blasio to 43rd President Barack Obama.
Part-macabre museum/part-bar, House of Wax is the perfect spot to enjoy a night out in a creepy place. Emulating the panoptica exhibits of the past, the museum wax displays of human organs and anatomy, perfect to go with a side of craft beer and well made cocktail drinks. Offering a taste of the Catskills mountains in Brooklyn, Livingston Manor offers a small town escape from the city. The bar hopes to give you good vibes among the spirits and craft drinks offered in the bar.
Founded in 2003, ISSUE ROOM offers a non-profit space to showcase local and emerging artists’ works. Spend a night out in this space with live music, art showcases and drinks and celebrate all that Downtown Brooklyn has to offer.
