The Chelsea District is one of the older districts of New York and not as well known. The area has history dating back to 1750’s. By 1847, because industry was growing so rapidly, the Hudson River Railroad laid tracks to transport lamp oil and turpentine. The tracks were then elevated to alleviate increasing traffic.  Today this former train line is The High Line Park. Tourists can walk the 3 mile long park built along those abandoned freight tracks. Pass by the original Nabisco cookie factory where Oreo cookies were first invented! The High Line borders the Meatpacking District which until the 1990’s was the hub of all meat processing in and out of New York.
Locals and tourists alike will enjoy Chelsea Piers Sports and Entertainment Complex.  The original piers were built for the highlight of luxury ocean liner travel but they subsequently fell into disrepair. They were purchased and rehabilitated to include TV studios, a health club and spa/salon, the city’s largest training center for gymnastics, two basketball courts, playing fields for indoor soccer, batting cages, a rock climbing wall, dance studios. It also includes a multi level golf driving range and the only year round ice skating rink. For a special treat, Spirit cruises leaves from Pier 60. They offer a wide assortment of lunch and dinner cruises aboard their luxury vessels.
Chelsea has interesting stores and galleries. It is considered one of the edgiest contemporary art districts around. The street art can be seen incorporated on the buildings. Artists come here to produce art and exhibit their work at local galleries, such as the Morgan Lehman or Pace galleries.

A popular tourist destination is Chelsea Market which is filled with shops and restaurants. It offers everything from soup to nuts or wine to coffee! For shopping – a visit to Dave’s is a must do. They have an awesome selection of clothing and jeans for yourself and the family!

The Joyce Theatre hosts different dance companies from Martha Graham to Jose Limón. The Joyce Theater shows are reasonably priced.  During the later hours, Highline Ballroom is both a concert venue but a nightclub where stars come to have a blast.
