Central Park

World Famous NYC Park

Central Park is only the 5th largest park in NY,  Due to its popularity, it’s the most frequented park in New York City and possibly the United States. It was designed in the 1850’s by Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux. Designated a National Historic landmark in 1962, today the park hosts sporting and musical events of all kinds including the Victorian Gardens seasonal amusement park. The Park is also the finish line of the world-famous New York City Marathon outside Tavern on the Green.

It is truly a sanctuary of nature, with green-spaces and decorations sure to transport visitors to a different realm. While many people have an image of the rowboats on the many lakes or the famous Wollman Ice-Skating Rink, there are many other cool things hidden here. Weighing 180 tons, Cleopatra’s Needle is one of three world famous obelisks gifted from Egypt in 1881. Not to be missed is the Central Park Carousel, installed in 1951. Originally carved and installed in 1908 in Coney Island, riders can enjoy its fifty eight hand carved horses and various chariots.

On nice days, folks will spread picnic blankets on Sheep Meadow (also known as the Great Lawn) and take walks along the Ramble path. In addition, children enjoy the Children’s Zoo, a perfect little institution that the entire family can appreciate. Alice in Wonderland statue and Strawberry Fields are other fun photo-ops for this reason. The latter was created in memory of John Lennon, with the word “Imagine” carved into the mosaic. At Strawberry Fields and other spots around the park, many outdoor concerts are held- and most are free to attend. For a unique experience, hire a horse and carriage ride for a quaint ride through the park. During the summer,  you can check the schedules for the Naumburg Bandshell: free Shakespeare and concerts under the stars!
