Crown Heights
Home to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and the Brooklyn Museum
Located in the heart of Brooklyn, this working-class neighborhood offers a little taste of the Caribbean mixed with a historically Jewish population. An area full of attractions, the neighborhood is home to two of the borough’s children’s museums, Brooklyn Children’s Museum and Jewish Children’s Museum, as well as the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and Prospect Park.
The area’s history dates back to the 1660s when Europeans first began settling in the area. Between 1880 to 1910, the neighborhood was one of Brooklyn’s most affluent neighborhoods as Manhattan’s rising bourgeoisie began to buy secondary homes in the area. By the 1920s, Jews and African Americans started to move into neighborhood, leading to the current melting pot it is today.
The Brooklyn Children’s Museum serves as the first children’s museum of its kind in New York City. Founded in 1889, the museum provides interactive, hands-on exhibits and creates an innovative use of its collections. Kids from preschool to high school are invited to experience and learn at the museum. At the Jewish Children’s Museum, visitors from all walks of life can learn about Jewish heritage and culture through the museum’s contemporary technology and hand-on approach to learning.
As a cultural hub, Crown Heights has many restaurants for food lovers to try. At Basil, enjoy some Italian food with a unique twist. You can find the perfect dish here as the restaurant offers kosher, vegetarian and non-kosher options for their diners. For a Caribbean-style brunch, head over to Jemz for homestyle cooking. Dine in or take out their jerk chicken and plantains, fan favorites from the restaurant. At The Food Sermon, you can create your own bowls with a Caribbean twist. Try a brown/white rice bowl with jerk chicken, lamb or tofu.
For curious cheese lovers, the Crown Finish Caves is the perfect place for you. Located in a repurposed 1850s lagering cave, just 30-ft below the streets of Crown Heights.
Shoppers in Crown Heights can find unique curated piece and styles by checking out local shops. Ranging from boutiques to flower shops, you can find something to fit your aesthetic and one of these shops. At March Rue Dix, pick up some pre-owned, pre-loved decor and fashion pieces to fill up your closet and your home. Martine’s Dream, Calabar Imports and Suzette LaValle offer wide varieties of curated pieces and accessories for the fashion lover. At Chrysanthemum: Rare Teas & Flowers, order a custom made boutique to spruce up your home or sample traditional and rare teas on a chilly day.
