Corona
The Queen’s Crown

Originally known as West Flushing, this neighborhood’s name changed after a real estate developer wanted it to be called “the crown of Queens County.” In the first half of the 20th century, Corona became a popular place for Italians and African-Americans to live. But beginning in the 1960s, waves of Latin American immigrants arrived; this resulted in the present-day demographic being predominantly Hispanic.

However, its African-American past is far from gone. In the Langston Hughes Community Library and Cultural Center, there are legions of art and literature from African American artists. The center also works to preserve some 30,000 reference volumes written about black culture.

In addition, many legendary jazz musicians once called Corona home. You can get a taste of this at the Louis Armstrong House, a landmark historic building that offers guided tours as well as live performances. The museum owns a vast collection of relevant writings, recordings, and memorabilia. Anybody wishing to use these archives for research must make an appointment in advance.

Of course, no visit to this neighborhood would be complete without getting a treat from the Lemon Ice King of Corona!
