Cobble Hill
Visit New York City’s Largest Collections of Middle-Eastern Shops
Surrounded by Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens and the Columbia Street Waterfront District, this small neighborhood is home to one of the largest French expat communities in NYC. Lining the streets are historic brownstones where residents and businesses come together. The neighborhood gets its namesake from a conical hill located at the intersection of Pacific Street, Court Street and Atlantic Avenue.
In its past, Cobble Hill was a part of South Brooklyn, a former neighborhood in the City of Brooklyn. The neighborhood was rural until the development of “Romanesque” revival style buildings. Middle class residents started to flock into these new homes in the 1880s. In the 1920s, the neighborhood became a melting pot of immigrants which still influence the neighborhood today.
Artists and art lovers flock to the area for its unique art scene. Located in a converted factory space, the Invisible Dog Art Center serves as a multidimensional space for artists of mixed mediums to display their work. The gallery has housed offerings such as avant-garde art performances to film screenings. Contrary to its name, Micro Museum is not a space dedicated to miniature artifacts. The space is a boutique sized space for showcasing multiple art mediums from traditional art to visual media. The museum hopes to inspire future artists, teachers and art enthusiasts all-round. A favorite place for local moviegoers, Cobble Hill Cinemas offers a selection of first-run films mixed with showings of independent films and foreign films. The theater may be small, but it has a cozy feel of the classic cinemas of the past.
Take a trip to Count Street and visit the stops lining the block. A local treasure, Sahadis has served the community for 65 years and continues to do so. As classic Brooklyn go to spot for fresh meals, ethnic snacks and desserts, the store is a perfect spot to grab lunch and an assortment of treats.
As home to a vast variety of Mediterranean food, Cobble Hill has many diverse forms of cuisine ranging from Italian to Mediterranean. For Middle Eastern food with a casual atmosphere, head down to Yemen Cuisine for classic food and faire. Hibino offers classic Kyoto style food mixed with a twist. The restaurant stresses fresh ingredients and boasts wide menu of sushi. Libertador is a favorite for Argentinian cut steaks. The restaurant serves fresh free-range grass fed meat with homemade chimichurri sauce on the side. Serving fresh and flavorful foods is a theme among Cobble Hill eateries, so go enjoy some on your next trip!
