Clinton Hill
Where Some of Brooklyn’s Most Historical Buildings Lie
Home to one of NY’s best design schools, Pratt Institute, this northern-central neighborhood provides a laid-back artsy feel for resident and visitors alike. The neighborhood is surrounded by the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Williamsburg and Bedford-Stuyvesant. Just 30 minutes away from Manhattan, the area is a perfect space for millennials with its affordable rent.
Clinton Hill began its life as a prominent area for the middle-class in the 1880s. The neighborhood continued to flourish until the upper class moved back into Manhattan in the 1920s. The neighborhood went through urban renewal, followed by brownstone revival in the 1970s. The neighborhood has a historic district, with a collection of buildings from different eras of the past.
Locals and visitors can head down to Underwood Park, located in the Clinton Hill Historic District. The park was once the site of typewriting manufacturer, John Thomas Underwood’s mansion home. In the 1950s, Underwood’s widow and daughter donated the space to the city, eventually converted into a park in 1956. The park has many interesting places such as playground and chess boards.
As a learning turf for art and design students, Clinton Hill has a few art stores and art learning spaces surrounding the area. For an outdoor art experience, visit the Pratt Sculpture Garden for a view of remarkable pieces created by Pratt architects. Located on the outside grounds of Pratt Institute, this garden is a private open space, great for taking an art stroll. Visitors can peruse each strategically placed piece in the garden while learning each of their stories. At Brooklyn Wheel Works, learn the craft of pottery from one of their classes. Perfume maker Joya Studio offers private tours of their factory, showcasing artisans and workers creating their products. The warehouse also has a 1,000 foot sq foot gallery space near its entrance.
As home to some of Brooklyn’s best restaurants, Clinton Hill has an array cuisines for foodies and diners alike. From classic Italian dishes to new American style meals, restaurants in Clinton Hill might have the perfect place for you. A hidden gem among NYC restaurants, Lunitas is a cozy spot for morning breakfast or brunch. Serving freshly brewed coffee and treats, the restaurant is perfect for a quick morning bite. A place for seasonal dishes, Mayfield offers classic dishes with the freshest ingredients all around. With a casual setting, the restaurant is superb place for low-key dining or date night. For Florentine cuisine with a vintage feel, head down to Locanda Vini e Olii for meal. Located in a repurposed historic pharmacy, the restaurant has been a staple in the neighborhood since 2001.
