Carroll Gardens
Carroll Gardens Has Picturesque Streets Lined with Beautiful Shops and Homes
Located in the northwestern part of Brooklyn, Carroll Gardens is home to large residential front gardens and historic brownstones in the area. Its named after Charles Carroll, the only Roman Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence. Though Carroll himself never lived in Brooklyn, he helped defend the Old Stone House in Gowanus during the Battle of Brooklyn. The “gardens” of the neighborhood refer to the spacious front yards of residential brownstones throughout the neighborhood that once displayed Catholic ornaments. Near to Cobble Hill and Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens takes its place as the Ca derivative in the portmanteau, BoCoCa.
One of the best ways to experience the neighborhood is to stroll along the side streets of the area. Take a look at the neighborhood’s heritage by visiting the Van Westerhout Cittadini Molesi Social Club’s Madonna Addolorata on Court Street. The shrine is home to a madonna statue, symbolic to the local Catholic community.
As Brooklyn’s third-oldest park, Carroll Park is the perfect place for enjoying the weather on a nice day. The park has unique features including a WWI Memorial, a bocce ball court and multiple playgrounds. The park is also home to Smith Street Stage, where you can catch a free show produced by local actors.
Leading from other surrounding BoCoCa areas, Court Street offers a mix of retail and indie shops lining the street. Antique collectors can appreciate the selection of Yesterday’s News vintage furniture. Music lovers can find the perfect record by peeking through Black Gold Records’ antique record selection. The record store / coffee shop serves up New Orleans style cold brew coffee to complement your happy hunt for music. Part barbershop/part toy shop, shoppers at If I Were A Toy can find the perfect learning experience toys for kids in store.
Home to classic food and hip restaurants, Carroll Gardens does not disappoint with food. Established in 1904, Ferdinando’s Focacceria is no ordinary trendy hipster eatery. Offering a taste of old school Brooklyn, this restaurant is a favorite for locals as a go-to joint for homemade Italian meals. Named after the New York strait, Buttermilk Cafe serves up American bistro comfort food perfect for morning brunch or dinner. The restaurant has many delicious options to chose from as well as a great menu for vegetarian diners. At Brooklyn Farmacy and Soda Fountain, take an ice cream inspired trip back in time. The parlor is located in a repurposed 1920’s apothecary space, bringing a vintage feel to a modern day shop.
