With a twist on the famous story, The Wizard of Oz, Wicked The Musical shows us that there are two sides to every story. The story revolves around Elphaba, who was known as “The Wicked Witch of The West” in The Wizard of Oz. However, in this version, Elphaba is portrayed as a kind person who is misunderstood by those around her because of her green skin and magical powers.
In contrast, Glinda, who was known as “The Good Witch” in The Wizard of Oz, is praised by those around her. She is known as the popular girl, and her bubbly personality is the complete opposite of Elphaba’s. At first these two characters butt heads, and even sing a song called, “What is This Feeling” to express how much they loathe each other. However, as the play continues, Glinda and Elphaba become close friends, and we watch as they learn the value of friendship and love.
Wicked The Musical opened in 2003 and has been running ever since. The famous composer, Stephen Schwartz, created the music and lyrics and the book is by Winnie Holzman. It is based on the novel by Gregory Maguire called, The Life and Times of The Wicked Witch of The West.
