Wave Hill
Garden Beauty Overlooking the Hudson

Wave Hill

Wave Hill is a public garden and cultural center tucked away in the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx. It has been around since the mid-1800s, but the area only became what we know it as now in 1960. In that year, the City of New York took receivership of the area and turned it into a nonprofit institution.

Wave Hill overlooks the Hudson River and Palisades. As a result, its prime location brings out the area’s beautiful gardens and landscapes. More importantly is its mission to connect people to the natural world with exhibitions and education. All exhibitions and educational efforts are connected to horticulture.

The area spans 28 acres. It has acted as a home to a multitude of famous individuals, such as Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Henry Huxley, and Mark Twain. Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, lived there with his family in the 1870s. Thomas Henry Huxley, who helped Charles Darwin publicize his theory of Darwinism, visited the site frequently. Meanwhile, Mark Twain, one of the most renowned and celebrated American authors, leased it in the early 1900s.

The site houses multiple gardens, such as the Aquatic Garden, the Kerlin Overlook, the Shade Border, and the Wild Garden. The Aquatic Garden is home to fish, frogs, and dragonflies who live in its water plants and grasses. The Kerlin Overlook allows visitors to look out onto and see astonishing views of the Hudson River. The Shade Garden is full of plants that act as natural providers of shade, such as fern and other woodland plants. On the other hand, visitors come to the Wild Garden to explore and receive gorgeous river views.

On average, Wave Hill sees 65,000 visitors every year. As a result, this is the most popular site in Riverdale.
