NY Philharmonic
America's Oldest Symphony Orchestra

NY Philharmonic

Founded in 1842 by Ureli Corelli Hill, the NY Philharmonic (or “NYPhil”) is the oldest symphony orchestra in America.  NY Philharmonic is also one of the oldest orchestras in the world! Today, it maintains its status as a leading cultural institution in the city. Musical luminaries such as Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland have led the company as Music Director over the years. In addition, it has toured to 432 cities in 63 countries. Some of these touring performances have even deployed globally for diplomacy causes.

The Philharmonic is not only a source of entertainment. It also serves as a valuable tool in educating and bringing music to the masses. And it doesn’t have to always be done by breaking the bank. In fact, the NYPhil participates in a number of events, such as the free Concerts in the Parks and Insights at the Atrium. Its presentation of Young People’s Concerts dates back to 1924. Furthermore, its Philharmonic Schools program gives budding musicians the opportunity to learn from the best.
The orchestra’s repertoire isn’t just limited to standard performances of classical music. It also includes special events, such as the screening of a movie while the band performs the score live. Some recent offerings of this include E.T. and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. David Geffen Hall is the venue of choice for most local productions. It was established in 1973 at Lincoln Center. This theatre notably features “wraparound views” of its home base.
