Village Vanguard
Jazzy Bandstand and Carpet of the Greats

One of NYC’s great performance venues, the Village Vanguard has both a colorful history and a contemporary edge. Its roster of performers runs the gamut of generations and sound, featuring jazz musicians from all walks of the genre.

It opened in 1935 under Max Gordon in the heart of Greenwich Village. Although he died in 1989, his widow Lorraine still runs it. Some performers only do one-night engagements, while others can play up to six nights in a row. Fun fact: jazz legend John Coltrane made the club a household name in the 1960s, and now his son Ravi plays on that same stage! If you’re ever craving some sleek piano improvisation- or perhaps the alluring sound of a saxophone- the Village Vanguard is definitely a spot to consider visiting.
