Located on an inconspicuous corner in Greenwich Village, Cafe Wha? is a world-famous club and hotspot for talent. Musicians Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, Peter, Paul & Mary, Kool and the Gang, the Velvet Underground, all performed there. Additionally, comedians such as Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby, Woody Allen, Lenny Bruce, and Joan Rivers all started on this historic stage.
Founded by Manny Roth in 1959, Cafe Wha? became a fast hit with the revolutionary downtown crowd. A decade later, Menachem Dworman changed the club’s tune to feature Middle Eastern music. Rock music came back to Café Wha? with his guitar-playing son, Noam, in 1987.
Just a year after that, The Cafe Wha? House Band was formed. The band is known for its talented members, dynamic renditions of popular music, and tendency to feature celebrity guest artists. They play the club Wednesday to Sunday, while Monday is left for guest performers and Tuesday is the Funk Band.
To this day, the corner of MacDougal Street and Minetta Lane is the most rockin’ corner in the City.
